Spontaneous Crafting

Tomorrow night is our big Gala at my church's school. I've been up there every night this week and tonight stayed until 11:30. The theme for the Gala is Denim and Diamonds. A friend of mine has worked her tail off for this event. At our picnic she wears a visor. We got a running joke that I was going to bedazzle and jean-up her visor. I got an idea. I went to Walmart and bought a 97¢ visor, found an old pair of jean shorts in the donation pile at home, pulled out the glue gun and gems, and set to work. What a surprise this will be! Here is the end result:

Grandparent's Basement

Being a teacher I always look for things that are easy to clean or wipe off. I searched for months before I started last school for a seat for my reading area. I couldn't find anything. Then I remembered that my grandparents had a vinyl glider. This vintage glider was sitting in their basement collecting dust. When I asked them, they were more than happy to let me use it in my classroom. My dad rigged it so it could not glide and the kids couldn't get hurt. I have people come to my classroom just to sit on this couch.

Favorite Classroom Thrift...so far!

Here is my favorite thrift. I found this chair for $10! I read to my students from this chair and they absolutely love when they get to sit there! It is such a retro chair.

What started this blog?

Last school year I searched and searched for a 100th Day of School Shirt that was original. A light bulb went off (pun intended). I created the shirt below with 100 jewels using jewel-it and puffy paint. The shirt says "100 Days Brighter." I wore the shirt on the 100th day of school last year with many compliments. I decided to put a picture of me in the shirt on pinterest just to see what would happen. About a month ago I started getting notifications on my pinterest account of people liking and repinning my pictures of this shirt. I am now up to 500 re-pins and 300 likes. I wanted to share more of my ideas for other teachers!

Valentine's Day

My students made Valentine's for their parents. I wrote "I love mom & dad because..." on a white board and had them pose in front of a pink background. I pasted this on a red, heart-shaped, paper doilee. On the back the students wrote reasons they loved their parents. I made one for my parents. I made this example for my students:

Drama Club!

A couple of teachers and I have started a drama club at our school. We are performing a living Stations of the Cross on Good Friday. As per the usual, we have about 20 girls and one boy. Most of the girls have to play male roles; which does not make them happy. So I decided to look up how to make yarn beards on pinterest...this left something to be desired! I could not find anything that I could feasibly do with students. I decided to take matters into my own hands and I created my own yarn beard. Many people at work wanted to know how I made it and that lead me to this blog. In the coming weeks, I will be making these beards with my drama club students. As we make the beards I will post the process on here! Meanwhile, here is a picture of my beard (please excuse the tired look, it was 11 and I had been up all day!).
